Travel Insurance Checklist — What to Check Before You Buy
Coverage scope, free credit card insurance, and how to file a claim while abroad.
Travel insurance protects against medical emergencies, trip cancellation, delayed/lost baggage, and flight disruption. Choosing the right plan before departure can save you from enormous costs abroad.
Key Coverage Areas to Check
🏥 Medical expenses
The most critical coverage. US and European medical costs can reach millions of KRW without insurance. Look for unlimited or at least ₩100M+ coverage.
✈️ Trip cancellation / interruption
Reimburses non-refundable costs if you must cancel or cut short your trip due to covered reasons (illness, family emergency).
🧳 Baggage loss / delay
Covers replacement costs if baggage is lost, stolen, or significantly delayed.
⏰ Flight delay compensation
Many policies pay a daily allowance if your flight is delayed 6+ hours.
Free Coverage via Credit Cards
Several premium Korean credit cards (Samsung, Hyundai, Shinhan) include overseas travel insurance when you purchase the flight ticket with the card. Check your card benefits page — coverage limits vary widely by card.
How to File a Claim
1. Save ALL receipts and medical invoices — you'll need them for reimbursement.
2. For medical claims: get an English-language diagnosis certificate from the hospital.
3. File within the claim window (usually 30–90 days after returning).
4. Submit via the insurer's app or website with all supporting documents.
