How to Get the Best Exchange Rate — Bank, Airport & App Compared
Compare exchange rates and fees across Korean banks, airport counters, travel cards, and online services.
Exchange rate and fee structure vary widely between methods. The worst option — airport exchange counters — can cost 3–5% more than the best. A little planning can save you significant money on every trip.
Method Comparison
📱 Travel Card Apps (Best rate)
Travelogue (Hana Card) and Travel Wallet offer near-interbank rates with zero or minimal fees. Pre-load KRW, convert to foreign currency in-app, and withdraw at partner ATMs abroad. Requires 1–2 days to set up — do this before your trip.
🏦 Internet Banking Exchange (Good rate)
Major Korean banks (Hana, Shinhan, Woori) offer 50–90% fee discounts on exchange ordered via app. Pick up at the airport branch — no queue at the exchange counter. Order 1 business day in advance.
🏧 Airport ATM Withdrawal (Moderate)
Withdraw foreign currency at destination ATMs using a travel card. Rate is close to interbank, but ATM fees may apply locally. Avoid using regular debit cards — foreign transaction fees add up.
🏦 Airport Counter (Worst rate)
Exchange counters at Incheon Airport charge the highest spread — often 3–5% worse than the interbank rate. Only use if you have no other option. Even then, compare between counters — Hana Bank is usually marginally better than independent exchange booths.
💡 Golden Rule
Never exchange at your home-country airport. Exchange in Korea before departure or at your destination country using a travel card. The home-country airport counter is almost always the most expensive option.
