Carry-on Rules Checklist
A practical list of items often blocked at security.
Security confiscations are time-consuming and frustrating. This checklist covers the rules that catch most travellers off guard — run through it the night before departure.
Liquids Rule (100ml / 1L bag)
📋 Each individual container must be 100 ml or less. A 200 ml bottle that is half-empty still fails — it is the container size that counts, not the amount inside.
👜 All liquid containers must fit inside a single clear, resealable 1-litre bag (one bag per person). Remove it from your bag and place it separately in the tray at security.
🚫 Items commonly confiscated: water, drinks, yoghurt, creams/lotions over 100 ml, spray cans, gel shoe insoles.
Power Banks & Electronics
🔋 Power banks must go in carry-on only — they are banned from checked baggage. Maximum 160 Wh per unit; over 100 Wh requires airline approval.
🚬 E-cigarettes, vapes, and lighters are also cabin-only due to fire risk. Most airlines allow one lighter.
💻 Laptops and tablets must usually be removed from bags at security and placed in a separate tray.
Sharp & Restricted Items
✂️ Scissors with blades under 6 cm from the pivot point are generally allowed. Blades over 6 cm go in checked baggage.
🔪 Any knives, multi-tools, or blades of any length must be in checked baggage.
⚾ Sports equipment (bats, clubs, poles) must be checked.
⚡ Run a quick bag-check the night before departure. Clearing security without an issue is always faster than dealing with confiscation or a secondary inspection.
