Exploring Ancient Silla

Bulguksa, Seokguram, Cheomseongdae & Royal Tumuli — 1,000 years of Silla · 1 night 2 days

Last updated: 2026.06.07

Gyeongju was the capital of the Silla Kingdom for nearly 1,000 years and is often called "the museum without walls." The entire city is a UNESCO World Heritage zone, filled with royal tombs, ancient temples, astronomical observatories, and pagodas at every turn.

1Day 1 — UNESCO World Heritage Sites

  • Bulguksa Temple (9 AM): Korea's most celebrated Buddhist temple, founded in 528 AD. Highlights include the twin pagodas Dabotap and Seokgatap, the Blue Cloud and White Cloud Bridges, and the stunning multi-columned main hall.
  • Seokguram Grotto (11 AM): A 15-minute bus ride above Bulguksa. This 8th-century stone rotunda houses a serene granite Buddha — one of Korea's greatest artistic achievements and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Gyeongju National Museum (2 PM): Home to Emille Bell (the Sacred Bell of King Seongdeok), gold crowns from royal tombs, and thousands of Silla artifacts.
  • Donggung Palace & Wolji Pond (Anapji) (5 PM): The restored pleasure garden of the Silla royal family. The reflection of the palace in the pond after sunset is spectacular — one of Korea's most iconic evening scenes.

2Day 2 — Royal Tombs & Observatory

  • Daereungwon Tumuli Park (9 AM): A parkland of 23 royal burial mounds, some over 20 meters high. Walk the circular path among these grass-covered tombs at dawn for a uniquely atmospheric experience.
  • Cheomseongdae Observatory (11 AM): Built in 647 AD, this is Asia's oldest surviving astronomical observatory. The 9-meter bottle-shaped stone tower is made of 362 carefully arranged stones.
  • Gyeongju Historic Areas walk: The area between Cheomseongdae and Anapji is ideal for cycling — rent a bike near Daereungwon for ₩5,000/hr.
  • Departure: KTX from Singyeongju Station to Seoul (2 hrs) or Busan (30 min).

💡 Gyeongju Tips

Rent a bicycle from near Gyeongju Station (₩5,000–8,000/day) to explore the flat city center comfortably. The Gyeongju City Tour Bus connects all major sites for ₩5,500/day. Spring (cherry blossoms along Bomun Lake) and autumn (foliage at Bulguksa) are the most beautiful seasons to visit.
